Book Review – Hold Firm (Biker Daddy Bodyguards 1) by Sue Brown
Book Blurb:
Hold Firm by Sue Brown is the first book in the Biker Daddy Bodyguards series. A bodyguard who moonlights as a Daddy. A bratty boy whose life is genuinely in danger. A fake boyfriend cover story that everyone involved has complicated feelings about. On paper: six foot five of tattooed muscle, a boy who needs protecting whether he admits it or not, and enough role dynamics to fill a whole series. The premise had every marker of an absolute winner. Whether Sue Brown stuck the landing is where this review gets interesting.
Book Review
Hold Firm by Sue Brown had a lot of markers, which should have made it an absolute winner. I struggled toward the end and had to power through the book to reach its conclusion. The first book in the Biker Daddy Bodyguards series, it has potential.
Quinn and Caleb had chemistry. Unfortunately, a lot of it felt forced. The scenario once I got into it, felt somewhat confusing. Caleb needed a daddy, but he didn’t want a Daddy, but he really did want a Daddy even if he didn’t want to want one. That’s a lot of mental math that was in play right at the start of the book.
I wanted to slap Caleb in the head a bunch of times, considering how often he would put himself in danger. It was like, does he really fear what his ex might do? Or does he have a death wish? It was very frustrating. More frustrating was Quinn, who was a very laid back Daddy, and that got on my nerves sometimes, too. Because he clearly wanted Caleb as his boy, but he didn’t have any desire to actually make Caleb behave. So which was it?
Too much pretend, not enough of it felt real. Even when they got together, I had to flip back a few pages to reaffirm that they had actually had sex because it sort of was underwhelming. It was like oh m gee — we are getting together, but are we really together? Cause
here comes my ex, who has physically hurt me, and I am going to purposefully put myself in danger just to get on your nerves so Quinn will get pissed off even though I don’t actually want him to punish me.
Wanna add more confusion to the mix? The last bit where Quinn has a playroom made for Caleb and Caleb just sort of “discovers” that he’s a Little… did that really add anything to the storyline? Cause it sure didn’t feel like it did and the book could have gone without it. That portion felt squeezed into the story and not in a good way. It added nothing to the existing dynamic between Caleb and Quinn.
So I finished the book, but if the rest of the series is like this, then I am not sure I will read any of the others. I was hoping there would have been more to the biker in the series name, but the motorcycle club part felt more like an afterthought to the security/bodyguard aspect of the story.
