PSYCOP series continues with Victor and Jacob, where we left them at the end of Among the Living. With the last crime solved, we find that Jacob has moved into Victor’s place since he can’t really stomach going back to his own place. The stories in between the books are all conveniently collected in one volume from Jordan Castillo Price: PSYCOP Briefs.

The first short is: Coffee O’Clock (Psycop Briefs Vol 1)

PSYCOP Briefs

Things come to a head in this one over a cup of coffee. Who knew creamer would be such a trigger for Victor? Well it is, and it causes him to think over the way things are.

What is great about this short story is that we get a peek into the depth of what Victor feels for Jacob. One of the best things about their relationship is that they just GET each other. They each have things that they are struggling with, especially Victor who can be a bit of an emotional mess. Regardless, he appreciates what Jacob brings to the table and is willing to give it a try.

I laugh out loud at times in this series. It is all things that are interesting and good. Jackie the dead hooker who haunts Victor’s apartment stoop is hilarious. It is even funnier that Victor has his great epiphany about “the relationship” as he is arguing with her on his way back from the bodega.

Thaw (Also in Psycop Briefs) — Takes place just before the next novel Criss Cross (PSYCOP 2)

Original cover from JCP

This is a fun read, Jacob takes Victor on a date to a skating rink. Victor is a good skater, and no surprise, what Victor does revs Jacob’s engine. Who knew gliding around a skating rink could be so tantalizing?

Victor & Jacob are like old friends. They are so good together that I can hope for a better world as I bask in their reflected glory.

Next: Criss Cross (Psycop #2)
